Having returned to the track in smart form this time in, Rock Sturdy has opened as and maintained status as clear favourite for success, currently available at odds of $2.60 ahead of Pheidon ($4.40), Monton ($5.50) and Tougher Than Ever ($8).

Will Rock Sturdy justify favouritism and win the 2014 Bill Ritchie Handicap, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?

Pheidon ($4.40)

Securing three wins and three minor places from just nine competitive starts so far, Pheidon is yet to experience much more than a sprinkling of bets for success in the 2014 Bill Ritchie Handicap, and therefore still offers punters exceptional value at a quote of $4.40. Performing well over his maiden racing preparation over summer and autumn this year, the Al Maher gelding won each of his first two starts and continued to build in form and class on his way to victory in the Group 2 Alister Clarke Stakes (2040m) and second in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) most notably. While unable to figure in contention in his first start this time in, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident the four-year-old will be far better for the competitive run and is expecting a polished performance from the ideal inside barrier.

Rock Sturdy ($2.60)

Finishing outside the places just twice in a career that has so-far spanned nine starts, Rock Sturdy is a great chance of finishing in competitive position, if not the front of the pack in the Bill Ritchie Handicap and is therefore well and truly worth consideration for a bet; arguably offering the best value to punters as a selection in a trifecta or quinella. Finishing second in a minor over 1200m first-up on July 19th, the Fastnet Rock entire claimed two strong victories back-to-back in August before finishing a luckless fourth when blocked for a run in the final straight of the TAB Rewards 3.y.o+ (1400m) last time out on September 6th. Charged with overcoming the outside barrier, Rock Sturdy will be partnered by Corey Brown in the 2014 Bill Ritchie Handicap.

Aussies Love Sport ($9)

Charged with carrying a race-low 54kgs, allocated the ideal barrier 4 and confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Kerrin McEvoy, all signs seem to point towards a standout performance from classy miler Aussies Love Sport in the 2014 Bill Ritchie Handicap. Finishing outside the places just once in five starts over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival the son of Redoute’s Choice won the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) and finished third in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) most notably. Unable to figure in contention in his first start this time in, Aussies Like Sport is more than worth consideration for a return to contention this weekend.
